Poplar Road Public School (Mass Timber Replacement School)

A replacement for the Jack Miner Senior Public School that Raymond Moriyama designed in 1958, the new Poplar Road Junior Public School is the Toronto District School Board’s first mass timber project. This ambitious building incorporates sustainable design principles, setting a benchmark for future schools with its mass timber construction and low carbon mechanical systems. At the centre of MTA’s design for the school is our “kit-of-parts" strategy, which involves organizing individual parts into easy-to-manufacture components for assembly and shipping. The mass timber grid, in addition to being lower cost and more efficient, lends durability, warmth and flexibility for changing student populations.
