The Mathematics 4 (M4) Building at the University of Waterloo, designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects, will serve as a new heart on campus promoting social interaction and informal study.

The 120,000 sf facility will house math research and learning spaces, with a design focused on energy efficiency and sustainability. The building will feature a solar chimney to enable a building-wide natural ventilation strategy, high-performance envelope, with heating for the building provided from a newly consolidated data centre for the math department. The objective of this project is to help link the various math departments and create new central social and collaborative spaces for UW’s world-class academic faculty. The building sits against and spans partially overtop of one wing of the Davis Centre in order to preserve the existing Math Quad space, thus acting as both a connector to existing math facilities, and a new front door to the math faculty for visiting scholars, academics, and students.
