“Viewpoint: Technical Women” by Elsa Lam

Canadian Architect Editor, Elsa Lam, has penned a review on the recent Building Equality in Architecture Toronto (BEAT) Leadership Seminar, where MTA’s Director of Sustainability Olivia Keung was a featured guest. The event took place at T3 Bayside in Toronto, where Olivia and Dima Cook of EVOQ Architecture, Kendra Kusick of Teeple Architects, Sophie Tremblay of LGA Architectural Partners, and Jennifer Davis of WZMH Architects spoke on their own experiences in pursuing technical specialties in design and STEM, and how doing so can lead to fulfilling careers pathways for women in architecture.

“Advocating for women to take on more technically oriented roles is part of Olivia’s passion: early in her career, she observed how men were often picked to take on “meatier” tasks and projects, and how that led to them making quicker gains in expertise, status, and salary. “If they can do it, so can I,” she concluded—as did the other panellists.”
