The West Memorial Building Rehabilitation project (pictured) is a major modernization and restoration of a Classified Federal Heritage Building located in the downtown core of Ottawa. The scope of work includes a complete masonry restoration, structural and seismic upgrades throughout, new base building systems, and the infill of two 5-storey central lightwells. The two newly created feature spaces within the building – one serving as the as the new home for the Supreme Court and the Federal Courts, and the other serving as the “Grand Hall”, the focal point of gatherings and events within this historic landmark – will reinvigorate the cores of the WMB.
Glass and steel are instrumental elements comprising the structural system and finishes of the overhead skylights capping these spaces. The design of which is truly innovative, consisting of diagonally intersecting steel beams, creating a long-span structure that is both efficient and aesthetically pleasing. These dynamic photographs of the skylights were taken by Salina Kassam on site back in December 2023.
