Centre for Urban Innovation at Toronto Metropolitan University Turns 5
The Centre for Urban Innovation (CUI) at Toronto Metropolitan University had its official opening 5 years ago today!
This downtown campus facility is a place where science research labs, fabrication, incubation, assembly spaces, and commercial spaces come together to create real world applications for the urgent urban issues of our time — energy, water, and nutrition. An addition to a heritage building (the Ontario College of Pharmacy built in 1886), this highly sensitive and sustainable project embodies the spirit of resilience and adaptive reuse.
Much of the original building was retained which allows the heritage details to be an integral part of the design. The new building additions maximize natural light where possible, and the labs on the fourth and fifth floor offer views overlooking the city and heritage roofline, reminding researchers of the far-reaching impact of their work on the community, the city, and beyond.
“The opening of CUI adds to the rise of Toronto’s portfolio as a world class city. Through this building, the young minds of today can solve the problems faced by society now and in the future.”
– Mohamed Lachemi, President and Vice Chancellor, Toronto Metropolitan University
