Science North was opened to the public 40 years ago today!

This interactive museum located in Sudbury, consists of two snowflake-shaped buildings on the southwestern shore of Ramsey Lake. The buildings are connected by a rock tunnel, which passes through a billion-year-old geologic fault. This fault line was not known to be under the complex when the site was originally selected and was discovered only during the construction of the building, resulting in a nimble redesign, focused on the unique geology, incorporating it as a central theme. The two buildings are set against a natural waterfront in a park featuring a wharf, beach, and outdoor pavilions, creating a destination experience, that quickly made Science North a core museum linking educational, cultural, and recreational centres across Northern Ontario.

Today, Science North will mark this significant milestone by hosting a day of festivities, inviting the community to join in the celebration!

This Moriyama Teshima Architects and Townend, Stefura, Baleshta & Nicholls Architects (now Bélanger Salach Architecture) joint venture legacy project, was the 1986 recipient of the Governors General’s Medal for Architecture.
