Looking to our future, Moriyama & Teshima Architects is pleased to announce new leadership positions for the following members of our team. These individuals have demonstrated continued passion, dedication, and skill in the service of MTA’s values and we look forward to the expanded contributions we are confident they will make in their new roles.

He is an expert in project planning and management, and is committed to ensuring timely, efficient, and comprehensive project services while maintaining a high level of commitment to design excellence. Recently Ben has taken on increasing responsibility for MTA’s pursuits and proposals, and now oversees the efforts of the marketing group as well. Ben is a licensed Architect with the OAA, a certified Project Management Professional with the PMI, and a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Master of Architecture program.

C. Po Ma | B. Arch., M. Arch., OAA, MRAIC
Principal
Po Ma is one of MTA’s most experienced Project Managers and Contract Administrators, having led many of our most valued projects since joining Moriyama & Teshima Architects in 1995. In his long career with MTA, Po has applied his excellent technical and organizational skills to keep complex schedule-driven projects on track. Among many other accomplishments, Po was critical to the realization of the Wynford Drive Campus Project (the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre) in Toronto—a spiritual and cultural landmark six years in the making. Conceived in collaboration with the renowned international architects Fumihiko Maki and Charles Correa, the project required mastery of technically exacting design standards and exceptionally precise construction with minimum tolerances. Po is now leading another large-scale, complex project – Ottawa’s West Memorial Building, which will become the temporary home for Canada’s Supreme Court.

Phil Silverstein | B.Arch., MAATO, LEED AP BD+C, GRP
Principal
Phil Silverstein brings a wealth of experience as Contract Administrator, Designer and Job Captain of Ontario university buildings and complex, multi-phase renovation and expansion projects. Since joining Moriyama & Teshima in 2001, Phil has delivered many major university projects — the Ryerson Center for Urban Innovation, UTM Innovation Complex, UTSC Science Research Building, Goldring Student Centre, Multi-Faith Centre and School of Continuing Studies. All were renovations and expansions of existing buildings, an expertise Phil has further developed through the Niagara Falls History Museum, Guelph Civic Administration Complex and Humber College Welcome Center and Athletic Center. Phil’s integrated approach to design, comprehensive understanding of building science, efficient working methods, his ability to work in a wide range of scales, and his personable client / construction team interface skills have made him a skilled team leader. In recent years, Phil has developed expertise in mass timber construction and sustainable design, and is presently leading two cutting-edge mass timber, low carbon designs into construction.

Louis Lortie | B.E.D.S, B.Arch, OAA, OAQ, MRAIC
Senior Associate
Louis Lortie is one of MTA’s most experienced architects, with nearly 20 years with the firm and more than 30 in the profession. His career has centred around the construction of large and complex projects where he was involved in the preparation and coordination of construction documents followed by the responsibilities of site administration and review of construction. His experience with the construction administration process has provided him a thorough understanding of buildability issues and a keen eye for detail which he brings back into the other phases of the design process – making seemingly challenging details feasible. In recent years, Louis has worked as a studio-wide QA/QC resource, ensuring that all MTA projects are drawn to an exacting standard. A highlight in a career full of them, Louis distinguished himself on the landmark Canadian War Museum project in Ottawa, published worldwide and a recipient of the Governor General’s Medal, Canada’s highest architectural award.

Janice Chan | B.Arch.Sc.
Associate
As Contract Administrator and Project Manager, Janice Chan has played a key role in completing MTA’s most complex and exacting projects. A testament to her effective communication skills and attention to detail, Janice worked closely in collaboration with internationally renowned architects Maki and Associates to realize Toronto’s landmark Aga Khan Museum. Janice’s proven communication skills, comprehensive knowledge of building technology and construction experience have made her a go-to expert for large scale projects such as the Ismaili Centre and the new Canon Canada Headquarters in Brampton, and she is now spearheading the project specifications and construction administration efforts for the complex of buildings MTA has designed for the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Mary O’Malley | B.S.Arch., M.Arch., LEED AP BD+C
Associate
Mary O’Malley has over 10 years of professional experience working in the United States, Canada, and the UK, including architectural research, building performance analysis, and building design in both academic and commercial contexts. Mary has been a member of the MTA office since 2016 and has made significant contributions to the design and realization of the UBC Okanagan Teaching and Learning Centre, the West Memorial Rehabilitation, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge Canada Point of Entry. In addition to her professional practice, Mary also taught as an instructor at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and now frequently serves on critique panels and teaches workshops on the integration of emerging technology into design practice. A true team player, Mary’s inexhaustible ability to listen and communicate complex ideas and information has been a vital element to the success of all projects she has been involved with.

Sean Robbins | B.Arch.Sci., M.Arch. (Hons)
Associate
Sean has brought a new level of coordination and skill to our BIM design work since joining MTA as BIM Manager in 2016. His duties have included Revit integration, best practices, project support, proactive standards development, complex systems integration, BIM coordination, content creation, in-house training, troubleshooting and construction document production. In addition to his project experience, Sean instructs internationally trained architects and technologists through BIM in Professional Practice at Ryerson University — a position that he has held since 2013. His commitment to teaching BIM keeps him at the forefront of its advancement and integration and has afforded Sean a wealth of extra experiential knowledge that he has actively re-invested in his professional teams.

Jay Zhao | B.Arch, M.Arch

Jay has emerged as one of MTA’s most promising young designers, acting as design lead for several of the firm’s recent post-secondary projects and providing design leadership and direction from concept to construction. Placing emphasis on a holistic process that is carbon conscious, Jay strives for design that is socially stimulating, culturally enriching and high-performing. His work includes George Brown College “The Arbour”, Ryerson Centre for Urban Innovation, University of British Columbia Okanagan Commons, and the University of Toronto Mississauga Meeting Place Renovations.
