Mukwa Waakaa’igan Wins Gold Global Future Design Award

We are pleased to share that Mukwa Waakaa’igan Indigenous Centre of Cultural Excellence, designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Smoke Architecture, is a Gold Winner in this year’s Global Future Design (GFD) Award by Architecture Press Release (APR)!

A new heart for Algoma University’s campus in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the design intent of Mukwa Waakaa’igan is to provide a safe space welcoming visitors from across the globe to engage with and learn from Indigenous heritage. The facility’s archive will conserve the truth of the residential schools, the work of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni, and the impact of generational trauma – housing classrooms, opportunities for land based learning, offices for research, spaces for sacred ceremony, and rotating exhibits for regional, national, and international cultural exchange. Currently in design development, the building scheme targets minimal impact on the land using regional low carbon materials and passive principles.
