It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of legendary architect Fumihiko Maki on June 6th, 2024. Our thoughts are with his family and community during this difficult time.

Fumihiko Maki’s profound impact on the world of architecture is immeasurable and MTA is honoured to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Maki and Associates on two projects. The first, the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa, is a technically rigorous building representing a secular sanctuary for peace, diplomacy, and global pluralism. The second, the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto (pictured here: members of the project team), is a landmark building that stands as a testament to his visionary approach and deep respect for Islamic culture. Both projects, with their harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, stand as a symbol of Maki’s extraordinary talent and his ability to create spaces that inspire and connect people.

Fumihiko, a Pritzker Prize-winning architect, is renowned for his use and interplay of light and shadow in his work, as well as his focus on humanism in modern architecture. He will forever be revered by our firm as a visionary designer and an unparalleled collaborator.
