Designed for a Healthy Future – OSSTF/FEESO’s New Provincial Office Building

MTA Partner, Carol Phillips, and Principal, Phil Silverstein, contributed to the spring issue of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) Education Forum publication, entitled “Equity Through a Workplace Health and Safety Lens”.

Their article, “Designed for a Healthy Future – OSSTF/FEESO’s New Provincial Office Building” beginning on page 27 of the magazine, describes the design of OSSTF’s new headquarters and multi-tenant building, designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects and currently under construction at 60 Mobile Drive in Toronto. The facility will be a progressive 3-storey, 124,000 SF mass timber structure that uses net-zero strategies, and seamlessly integrates commercial opportunities.

When speaking about the selection of mass timber structural composition over other more commonly chosen materials, Carol stated:

“…wood is a natural carbon sink and if harvested sustainably, we can use this carbon sequestering material and protect it within a high-performance building for another hundred years and use this durable and beautiful material instead of high emitting materials”.

Learn about the specific ways our team pushed the envelope for efficiency metrics on this project, through materiality choices, heating and cooling systems, and smart programmatic planning.
