Projects — Educational — Hillfield Strathallan College

Project Description[+]

Overview

An institution with a long and distinguished history, Hillfield Strathallan College called upon Moriyama & Teshima Architects to champion a new vision for a unified campus. The Michael DeGroote Senior School provides a student-centred facility that forms a new green heart for the campus through connections to the existing buildings. An interior courtyard within the building captures natural light and introduces a material palette of rich iron-spot brick, polished concrete and escarpment limestone into the building.

The Student Commons and Learning Commons are centrally located and their orientation reflects the school’s core values, which extend far beyond the exceptional educational opportunities, and nurture the whole child. Through these flexible and social areas, students are provided with active space outside the classroom for collaborative learning, exploration and discovery.

The new Athletic Complex is a light-filled triple gymnasium, carefully designed to balance state-of-the-art sport amenities with the flexibility to transform into a ceremonial venue for large-scale events.

Testimonials

“Every student has a learning approach that is unique to them. Learning spaces should reflect this diversity and allow teachers and students to work together in a manner that best supports student growth. The Michael G. DeGroote Senior School will provide them with this opportunity.”
